Kiwanis Malaysia District
The 48th District of Kiwanis International, Malaysia District is headed by a Governor and a Board of Trustees to support Kiwanis Clubs throughout the country. There are five (5) Lieutenant Governors, each of whom takes charge of a division, and there are from 8 to 14 clubs in each division.
The first club in Malaysia was formed on 11 April 1976 through the pioneering initiative of the late Tan Sri Mohd Khir Johari, who was a Cabinet Minister at that time. Fondly known as “Bapa Kiwanis”, Tan Sri Khir Johari was the Charter President of the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur. Today there are 47 Kiwanis Clubs nationwide, with a membership of 1,200 Malaysians.
Kiwanis Malaysia achieved its District-in-Formation status in October, 2000 and subsequently was officially conferred District status in March, 2003.
Members of Kiwanis Clubs come from all walks of life, united in their regard of service to the community as one of their core values. From homemakers to people in the corporate and public sectors, colleges and universities, Kiwanians consists of young individuals embarking on careers, successful executives, as well as active retirees.
Kiwanians are active volunteers committed to making a difference on issues affecting local communities as well as global issues with special emphasis on programmes for the well-being of children. Its most recent global initiative is Project ELIMINATE which raised $120 million to fund the immunization of women to protect them from Maternal Neonatal Tetanus, a deadly disease that affects thousands of women and babies each day. This program was done n partnership with UNICEF.
In line with the motto of Kiwanis International: “Serving the Children of the World”, the Kiwanis movement in Malaysia has embarked on a bold strategy of catering to the educational and personal development needs of children and youth who are disadvantaged or face special challenges, through a combination of short-term and permanent, long-term service projects.
